It was recently updated to enable assessment of the impacts of climate change and pandemics on urban food systems (1,2). Innovations: This report was generated on 2022-08-19 at 08:00 (GMT+0) 2 Reporting 2021 Evidences Elaboration of Outcome/Impact Statement: WLE/Alliance has worked closely with local governments and other stakeholders to identify and understand the challenges, threats and dynamics of the food system in Cali, Colombia. In 2019, the City adopted a new food security policy (1). For 18 months, WLE/Alliance worked on constructing Cali’s food system profile, gathering and analyzing secondary data, interviews and previous research (2). A public webinar was then held to present it (3), and a major dissemination campaign was conducted (4-8). Findings and conclusions were presented by key actors (the Economic Development Secretariat, Health Secretariat, regional Food Supply Center and universities). Since then, the profile has been used as a communication tool to raise awareness, promote food issues on public agenda, integrate diverse stakeholders, highlight the city’s challenges and improve decision making (9,10). Local media, universities, private schools and units from local government have reported using the profile. The Municipal Secretariat of Social Welfare stated that the profile “has proved to be a very valuable tool for the design and planning of actions and projects related to food security carried out by the District Administration…. This study is part of the battery of inputs available for carrying out the diagnoses that will allow updating the Public Policy for Food and Nutritional Sovereignty and Security of Santiago de Cali” (9). A local university, Escuela Nacional del Deporte, stated that “the food system profile of Cali has been the basis for reading by the students in a course on food and nutrition security public policies and the nutrition and dietetics program, allowing basic information to generate arguments and analysis of the situations related to food and nutrition security … We are grateful to have access to this valuable information that allows the development of comprehensive training processes” (10). This exercise caught the attention of additional sectors and was the entry point to respond to a call from the Secretary of Economic Development of Cali for the creation of a Coalition for Food and Land Use. A new multi-stakeholder platform was launched, including government departments, City Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, NGOs, a research institution, a local university and the regional strategic planning unit, RAP Pacifico. It aims to propose solutions for strengthening the city–region food system, make sure that it responds to local needs, and ensure not only nutritious and safe food for all but also a competitive and sustainable base for the regional economy.
