TITLE OF PRESENTATION Name: Designation / Organisation: Integrating participatory and phylogenetic data into episystem research Michel Dione (ILRI) Participatory disease surveillance Participatory disease surveillance (PDS) uses participatory approaches and methods (Participatory Epidemiology –>> local veterinary knowledge) + conventional disease investigation methods (lab. diagnostic) Aim: determine the occurrence of PPR disease and describe its history and pattern. Community meetings in norther Senegal. Photo (Michel Dione, ILRI) PPR outbreak investigation in northern Senegal. Photo (Michel Dione, ILRI) Step 1: PDS key informant interviews Step 2: PDS community meeting Steps of PDS Areas with a high PPR incidence according to country data Transboundary livestock movements Livestock movement corridors Major small ruminant markets Transhumance routes Places where flocks congregate for grazing Step 3: Outbreak investigation Case study : Detection of lineage IV in Burkina Faso using PDS Determine high PPR risk areas in Burkina faso Step 1: Key informant interviews with vets Step 2: Community meetings with farmers Step 3: Sample collection (Banfora (#4); Koudougou (#3); Niangoloko; (#2); Niou (#1); 96 swab samples (eye, nasal, mouth); 28 organs (liver, spleen, lung, pharyngeal ganglion, bronchial ganglion, mesenteric ganglion) from dead animals Step 4: Lab analysis (RT-PCR and Sequencing) –>>> phylogenetic tree Case study : Detection of lineage IV in Burkina Faso using PDS 11 PPRV sequences show high heterogenicity compared to previously identified PPRV in Burkina Lineage IV in Burkina Faso was likely introduced from neighbouring countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Mali. There is high potential of PPRV spread among countries of the Sahelian episystem A well-established disease surveillance system integrating participatory and phylogenetic enabled us investigate lineages of PPRV circulating in different regions of Burkina Faso, while establishing the link to bordering countries. This approach should be scale to episystem zones Benefit of integrating participatory into episystem research Potential to integrate biophysical and local knowledge for communities and veterinarians to identify hotspots of PPR disease to inform risk-based interventions such as vaccination and biosecurity. Most suitable in episystem zones because of the transboundary aspects Low-cost investment Acknowledgements EcoPPR team Veterinary services of Senegal and Burkina Faso andlocal communities of respective countries EU-IFAD image2.jpg image3.png image4.jpeg image5.jpeg image6.emf #1 #2 #3 #4 #1 #2 #3 #4 image7.emf Burkina Faso-PR130-Banfora3-2022 Burkina Faso-PR127-Banfora2-2022 Burkina Faso-PR124-Banfora1-2022 Burkina Faso-PR131-Banfora4-2022 Burkina Faso-PR53-Koudougou1-2022 Burkina Faso-PR57-Koudougou5-2022 Burkina Faso-PR59-Koudougou6-2022 Burkina Faso-PR55-Koudougou3-2022 Burkina Faso-PR56-Koudougou4-2022 Burkina Faso-PR7-Niangoloko-2022 Burkina Faso-PR54-Koudougou2-2022 Mali-MW281026-2017-L4 Nigeria-KJ124765-2011-L4 Burkina Faso-PR185-Niou1-2021 Burkina Faso-PR186-Niou2-2021 Nigeria-MN725768-2018-L4 Burkina Faso-OQ448873-2021-L4 Burkina Faso-OQ448872-2021-L4 Burkina Faso-OQ448871-2021-L4 Burkina Faso-OQ448870-2021-L4 Cameroon-MH447978-2017-L4 Nigeria KF479417-2012-L4 DRC-OL310685-2012-L4 Nigeria-KJ124732-2013-L4 Niger-MG694464-2013-L4 Nigeria-KF479426-2012-L4 Cameroun-HQ131960-1997-L4 Morocco-KY197740-2015-L4 Algeria-KP793696-2012-L4 Morocco-HQ131924-2000-L4 Georgia-MF737202-2016-L4 Egypt-KX189064-2015-L4 Bangladesh-JX220410-2011-L4 India-KX03335-2016-L4 China-EU340363-2007-L4 China-EU815054-2008-L4 Dubai-FJ795511-2009-L4 China-KM089830-2014-L4 China-KP260624-2014-L4 Turkey-KU325487-2015-L4 India-AY560591-VaccineStrain-Sungri/96-L4 Nigeria-DQ840160-VaccineStrain75/1-L2 Nigeria-DQ840164-1976-L2 Ghana-DQ840163-1976-L2 Mali-MK777889-2014-L2 Niger-MG694467-2001-L2 Niger-MG694466-2001-L2 Burkina Faso-OQ448868-2019-L2 Burkina Faso-OQ448869-2019-L2 Burkina Faso-MK777901-2014-L2 Ghana-MK777904-2014-L2 Nigeria-KF479427-2012-L2 Mali-DQ840192-1999-L2 Mali-MK777896-1999-L2 Burkina Faso-MK777898-2008-L2 Ghana-KJ676597-2010-L2 Côte d'Ivoire-KR781451-2009-L2 Burkina Faso-MK777902-2014-L2 Senegal-HQ131963-2010-L2 Mauritania-KF483658-2012-L2 SierraLeone-JN602080-2009-L2 Benin-KT692538-2011-L2 Senegal-DQ840165-1968-L1 Niger-MG694468-2001-L1 Mali-MW281014-2014-L1 Mali-MW281010-2015-L1 Senegal-DQ840174-1994-L1 Burkina Faso-DQ840172-1988-L1 Côte d'Ivoire-EU267273-1989-L1 Comores-KM669158-2013-L3 Ethiopia-DQ840175-1994-L3 97 66 80 99 97 99 99 95 95 74 70 69 82 95 93 98 73 66 67 85 91 67 88 81 99 64 64 96 74 91 82 97 63 0.05 Lineage IV Lineage II Lineage I Lineage III image8.jpeg image9.png image10.png image11.png image1.jpg
