This builds on the inaugural Innovation Hub event held in September 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya. These events provide a platform to showcase the bold and diverse climate innovations emerging across Africa that directly align with the ambitions of the AU Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy (2022–2032). This Strategy – Africa’s first collective climate action plan – sets out priority actions the continent must urgently pursue to respond to climate change. It seeks to harmonise Africa’s response over the next decade by outlining guiding principles, priorities, and intervention areas for enhanced climate cooperation. Importantly, the Strategy is designed as a framework for action by all Africans, including both government and non-government stakeholders. Its success depends on broad-based ownership and inclusive participation. The Climate Action Innovation Hub provides a dedicated space for Africa’s women and young innovators to showcase game-changing, climate-oriented solutions and business ideas; exchange knowledge and lessons; and attract support from policymakers, investors, and partners. These transformative solutions – ranging from local initiatives to continental-scale models – respond to the Strategy’s priority themes, including: clean energy and energy access climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land management biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration green economy and sustainable value chains sustainable fisheries management water storage, conservation, and access waste management and the circular economy green transport and climate-resilient infrastructure resilient, climate-smart cities digital transformation and innovation. The innovations also address cross-cutting areas critical for amplifying climate cooperation and action, including advocacy, empowerment, awareness raising, capacity building, and climate literacy. The Climate Action Innovation Hub represents an important milestone in the journey to move the AU Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy from policy to tangible, meaningful action on the ground. By mobilising partners, innovators, and investors, the Hub plays a vital role in supporting the Strategy’s operationalisation. The following compendium presents innovator biographies, highlighting the inspiring work of individuals and enterprises driving climate action across Africa.
