1 Expo-event "YAAY DUND - Regenerating the living world Summary report - December 2024 Raphael Belmin & Marie Thouvenot 2 Executive summary The Dynamique pour une transition Agroécologique au Sénégal (DyTAES), on the initiative of the Centre de coopération en Recherches Agronomiques pour le Développement (CIRAD), organized an exhibition-event entitled "YAAY DUND - Regenerating the living world", as part of the Dakar 2024 Biennale of Contemporary African Art, from November 13 to December 08, 2024. The exhibition highlighted the fundamental but all too often overlooked role of women in food systems and the agroecological transition in Africa. The exhibition-event was held in an eco-designed ephemeral building at the foot of the African Renaissance monument in Dakar, Senegal. For the duration of the exhibition, the site hosted a rich program of events combining arts, science and political dialogue in order to highlight targeted themes related to agroecology and gender (conferences, round tables, artistic performances). The YAAY DUND exhibition served as a symbolic venue to celebrate the 5th anniversary of DyTAES, as well as the joint anniversaries of CIRAD, the Institut Sénégalais de Recherches Agricoles (ISRA) and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD). 3 Integrating gender into agro-ecological advocacy in Senegal In Senegal, agroecology policy advocacy has been led since 2019 by a multi-stakeholder coalition called the Dynamique pour une Transition Agroécologique au Sénégal (DyTAES). DyTAES is made up of 80 member organizations, including research institutions (CIRAD, IRD, ISRA etc.), NGOs (Enda Pronat, AgriSud International, GRET etc.), farmers' organizations, consumer associations and local authorities. The mission of DyTAES is to promote agro- ecological transition in Senegal through advocacy, awareness-raising, experience-sharing and support for territories in transition. DyTAES has always incorporated gender issues into its thinking, but prior to 2024 it had never carried out any large-scale actions on the subject. Yet food and agriculture are at the forefront of the fight for gender equality and women's empowerment in Africa. On this continent, women do 60% of the world's work, but earn only 10% of the income and own only 1% of the assets. In Senegal, women are key players - albeit undervalued - in the agricultural and food systems. They are involved in every link of the agri-food chain, from production to consumption, including processing and adding value to products. Women are proactive and central to the majority of agro-ecological transition projects. However, they are subject to major socio- economic inequalities, chief among which is poor access to land. The YAAY DUND exhibition-event DyTAES, on the initiative of CIRAD, organized the "YAAY DUND - Regenerating the living world" expo-event, a flagship action in its 2024-2025 action plan aimed at raising awareness of agroecology and gender issues among the general public and decision-makers. The word "YAAY DUND" is a Wolof translation for the concept of the nurturing mother. Through a series of portraits and triptychs by researcher-photographer Raphael Belmin, the YAAY DUND exhibition-event highlighted the fundamental but all too often neglected role played by women in the functioning of agri-food systems and in agro-ecological transitions in West Africa. It combined a permanent photographic exhibition with a rich program, bringing together scientific, artistic and activist voices. The exhibition was held for 1 month at the foot of the Monument de la Renaissance Africaine during the Dak'Art 2024 contemporary art biennial, between November 13 and December 8, 2024, and was accessible to the general public free of charge. The exhibition welcomed between 50 and 70 visitors a day, over 22 open days, for a total of around 1,300 visitors. In addition to this, the events directly reached around 1,600 people. The beneficiaries of YAAY DUND were: (i) the member organizations of DyTAES and DyTAEL, who implemented the exhibition activities with CIRAD's support; (ii) the general public and decision-makers, who were informed and sensitized through the photo exhibition and radio debates; (iii) the artists, who gained an audience thanks to their visit to YAAY DUND. https://dytaes.sn/ https://www.raphaelbelminphotography.com/t-fr 4 Exhibition overview The photo exhibition is composed of portraits of women in action, exposed in natural light in their everyday environment. The photographic corpus is composed of 4 series: - The series called "In the intimate confines of homes" (6 large-format photos, 130x87 cm, 1 cm forex support and American crate) takes us into African homes, kitchens and attics, imbued a hushed, earthy atmosphere. This immersion allows us to discover and value the care work carried out by women the home. - The series called "In the life of terroirs" (6 large-format photos, 130x87 cm, 1 cm forex support and American crate) takes us on a journey into the bright, colorful atmosphere of Senegalese villages. We meet women working in agriculture, preserving natural resources and passing on knowledge. The series illustrates their multifaceted role, their challenges and their achievements. - The series called "In the food systems" (14 triptychs, 90x60/20x30 cm, support forex 1 cm) highlights the involvement of rural women in different professions or initiatives that contribute to building more sustainable food systems: agriculture, processing, distribution, consumption, advisory support, research, political advocacy...etc.... - The series called "In the agroecological transition" (12 small-format photos, 30x20 cm, 1 cm forex support, American case) offers a face-to-face encounter with 6 men and 6 women farmers who are developing intelligent, resilient cropping systems inspired by the way ecosystems work. The series presents them as barefoot researchers, questioning the essence of the agro-ecological transition in Africa. Overview of the "In the agro-ecological transition" series. 5 A triptych from the "In Food Systems" series. Architecture and scenography The YAAY DUND exhibition was enhanced by an ephemeral building and immersive scenography designed especially for the event by scenographer, museographer and architect Myrtille Fakhredine. The scenographic building was designed to be modular, so as to welcome visitors in an immersive journey, or to open up an agora space for various events. It incorporated (i) fixed picture rails to organize the space and accommodate the series of large- and small-format photos, and (ii) rolling picture rails to hang the triptychs and recompose the space to suit the needs of each event. The building was encircled by painted scaffolding, inside which were placed culture trays (below) and gutters (above). The aim was to create a living, planted "skin" for the building. The light roof was made of recycled potato sacks held together by cables, forming a semi-opaque, breathable structure that attenuated sunlight and rippled in the wind. Floor lighting gave the artworks presence, especially at night. A colorful fresco lined the bottom of the agora, providing an identifiable visual mark for all the events produced during the show. The two exhibition texts were displayed on the entrance rails. https://famarch.fr/ 6 Entrance gate to the exhibition building A bird's-eye view of the exhibition building, revealing its vegetal skin and roof made of recycled potato sacks. 7 A glimpse of the mobile picture rails holding the triptychs in the "In the food systems" series. We can see the entrance rails with the exhibition texts (foreground) and the fresco that lined the agora (background). 8 YAAY DUND events The YAAY DUND exhibition served as a symbolic venue to celebrate 5 years of DyTAES, as well as the joint anniversaries of three research institutions (40 years of CIRAD, 50 years of ISRA, 80 years of IRD). For the duration of the exhibition, the site hosted a variety of events combining the arts and sciences, focusing on themes related to agroecology and gender (conferences, round tables, artistic performances). An agora space was integrated into the scenography, and placed at the heart of the exhibition area. Here, artists and experts led lectures, round tables and live performances, in a lively mix of art, science and political dialogue. Gender equality was a criterion for choosing the guests who took part in the programs. Table 1 provides more details on YAAY DUND's event program. A total of 18 events were organized in less than a month, including 7 theme days, 3 institutional celebrations, 1 TV show, 3 plays, 3 concerts and 1 photo competition for young people. According to our estimates, these events directly reached 1,600 people (Table 1). The expo's web page details all the events. The Organizing Committee met 11 times between March and November 2024, under the chairmanship of Ibra Touré, CIRAD Regional Director for West Africa Dry Zone. CIRAD was the initiator and technical coordinator of the event on behalf of DyTAES. The Organizing Committee was supported by a number of executive partners and contractors (Figure 1) - The Expo team was responsible for the design and production of the photo exhibition, operational coordination of the project, organization of the opening, cross-disciplinary communication, design and integration of illustrations and event photography. - The Scéno team was responsible for designing the architecture of the ephemeral building hosting the exhibition, the construction of the infrastructure, the scenography and narrative route, and the planting of the site. - The Monument team was responsible for the provision/operation of the venue and associated technical services (water, electricity, WC), day/night security, conference audiovisual equipment, cultural mediation, catering services and conference equipment (tables, chairs, conference tables, lecterns). Event organizers and cultural service providers were welcomed, informed and coordinated by the expo and monument teams (Figure 1). This campaign was led by Marie Thouvenot, project manager and communications officer, and consultant at CIRAD's Regional Office for West Africa. Communication specifically linked to the DyTAES was handled by the DyTAES communication unit, which brings together the communications managers of member organizations, with the aim of making the actions of DyTAES and its members visible through various media (Facebook, Twitter, website, quarterly newsletter, TV broadcasts). Information about the exhibition and related events was centralized on a web page, and relayed by the partner institutions' media and social networks in the form of targeted publications organized according to a communication plan. A weekly program of events was sent out at the start of each week. A graphic universe was built around YAAY DUND, based on illustrations by Nathalie Le Gall. These illustrations can be seen on the web page, in publications and in physical communication media (flyers, posters, on-site communication, see Figure 2 for an example). The exhibition and related events received extensive media coverage, with a minimum of 10 press articles, 13 press releases issued by the project's partner institutions and 5 video reports and TV shows (see box below). had a total budget of 132,353 euros, including the costs of producing the photographic exhibition, renting the venue, designing and constructing the scenographic building, organizing the events, and transversal services relating to security, sound, catering, equipment, etc., communication and administration.
