The International Conference on Nutrition (ICN) to be held in Rome in December 1992 is a major component of FAO's activities. It will be the first international conference of its kind and will be organized jointly by FAO, the World Health Organization, the member states, and other specialist organizations of the United Nations. The conference has five main objectives: -to analyze critically the current world situation, based on the sixth report on nutrition -to examine the question of guaranteed nutrition in developing countries -to address the problems of consumer protection -to evaluate the position of problem and marginal groups m developing countries -to consider the questions of healthy eating and lifestyles, and of food-related diseases. It is intended to draw up an action plan to bring about feasible but significant improvements in nutrition, especially among the poor in developing countries. Prior to the conference, regional and district meetings will be held at which specialists will address specific local and national problems. The participating countries (more than loo) have now produced national reports which will be the basis for the establishment of specific programmes.
