Abstract/Description
This presentation assesses opportunities and challenges for transforming Pakistan’s agrifood system, with a focus on wheat sector reforms, market modernization, and climate change adaptation. It examines the evolving wheat value chain following changes in public procurement policies, highlighting the differing roles of small, medium, and large farms in production, marketing, and storage, as well as the need for more efficient and transparent market institutions. The analysis explores pathways for agrifood system modernization through private markets, contract farming, farmer organizations, and value-chain development, while emphasizing the importance of sequencing policy and investment reforms. Using CGE-W model simulations, the presentation evaluates the long-term impacts of rising temperatures, reduced water availability, land degradation, and labor productivity losses on agricultural production, water use, household welfare, and food security. The findings underscore the importance of strengthening resilience to both chronic climate stresses and extreme flood events, while supporting inclusive and sustainable agrifood system transformation in Pakistan. -Abstract generated by Copilot AI 2.2
