| dcterms.abstract | Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by molds that pose significant risks to human and animal health and can have serious economic consequences by reducing food safety, livestock productivity, and international trade. This paper examines the challenges posed by mycotoxin contamination in Brazil and the public and private initiatives undertaken to strengthen food safety controls. It describes the implementation of regulatory standards for aflatoxins, monitoring, inspection, laboratory certification, and quality assurance programs based on Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles. The paper also highlights private-sector efforts to improve product quality through systematic testing, certification, and investments in contaminant control, particularly in the peanut and animal feed industries. These initiatives have been driven by increasing consumer concern and the need to comply with increasingly stringent domestic and international food safety requirements. The paper concludes that effective control of mycotoxins requires integrated action throughout the production chain and continued partnership between government and the private sector to strengthen food safety, maintain market competitiveness, and support industry-wide improvement. | en |
