| dcterms.description | Drought is common throughout much of Africa and, as a result, many attempts have been made to develop the continent's water resources using dam and irrigation schemes. These projects are often funded by the developed world, but few turn out to be long-term successes. Wasting the rain: rivers, people and planning in Africa evaluates the ways of water resource development in sub-Saharan Africa, based main]y on the author's own experiences. It compares the effectiveness of the large-scale modern developments with the smaller indgenous methods, showing the poorer results of the former, and the strength and diversity of the latter. By building on the indigenous knowledge of those affected, viable and sustainable alternatives can be developed.
