| dcterms.description | The declaration that the 1980s were to be the Industrial Development Decade for Africa deepened awareness among individual African countries of the need for scientific and technological development: Ghana was no exception. In August 1980, the Technology Consultancy Centre at the University of Science land Technology, Kumasi, Ghana, opened the first Intermediate Technology Transfer Unit (lTTU). This initial scheme became a centre for demonstrating new technology; training in new skills and manufacture of spare parts and equipment. In 1987 the Ghana Govemment, with technical assistance from the UK-based IT Consultants Ltd, established the Ghana Regional Appropriate Technology Industrial Service (GRATIS). This was to carry the ITTU concept beyond the University-based pilot scheme to a nation-wide network. Its aims were to develop adequate technological infrastructure in the regions so as to transfer high quality technology to the informal industrial sections, to train technicians from technical institutes who were deficient in practical know how and to provide manufacturing, repair and service facilities for small-scale industries in the regions. Within Ghana GRATIS has established a further nine regional ITTUs which are involved in technologies as diverse as metal machining; welding and fabrication; foundries; cotton spinning; weaving; cloth printing; woodworking; food processing; small business training; women's development; beekeeping; and alley cropping. The success of these regional ITTUs has prompted interest from other countries who are also interested in the concept. IT Consultants have therefore developed a 34 year pilot programme of replication for those interested in building on the Ghana experience. The quarterly newsletter Gratis news reports on news, views, conferences and seminars in all the areas in which GRATIS is involved.
