ILRI. 2026. Building Kenya's Red meat future. Video. Nairobi, Kenya: ILRI.

Abstract/Description

Kenya's pastoral rangelands cover over 70% of the country's land and supply more than 90% of East Africa's meat. But the market system that moves red meat from herder to consumer is fractured, and climate shocks are making it worse. The 2021-2022 drought alone wiped out 2.6 million livestock in Kenya.

In this video, researchers and partners working across the CGIAR Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Foods (SAAF), Multifunctional Landscapes, and Better Diets and Nutrition science programs break down what's blocking Kenya's red meat value chain and what a functioning, inclusive market system could look like for pastoralist communities.
