Abstract/Description

An assessment of the strengths and shortcomings of the institutions of the Guatemalan national agricultural research system (NARS) - principally the Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology - and their interaction and division of labor with CGIAR Centers. The paper weighs the impact of CGIAR support in providing genetic and other materials and of CGIAR training in developing the human capacity of Guatemalan NARS scientists, as well as indications of the adoption rates and impacts of new varieties of maize, rice, wheat, beans, and sorghum. Written by Rigoberto Stewart of CIMMYT.
