Presentation given at the PSEG Stakeholder Meeting on September 5, 2024. Washington, DC: International Food Policy Research Institute. https://hdl.handle.net/10568/152345

Abstract/Description

This presentation assesses the economy-wide impacts of Nigeria’s temporary suspension of import tariffs on key food commodities as a policy response to rising inflation and food insecurity. Using IFPRI’s RIAPA modeling framework, the analysis finds that while the policy has only modest effects on overall economic growth and inflation, it lowers food prices and increases real consumption, particularly among the poorest households. The results indicate positive welfare outcomes, including reductions in poverty and hunger, with especially strong benefits for food-insecure rural populations, although domestic agricultural producers may face lower prices due to increased import competition. The presentation concludes that food tariff suspension can provide short-term relief for vulnerable consumers, while highlighting the need for further analysis of longer-term impacts and complementary policy measures to strengthen food security. -Abstract generated by Copilot AI 2.2
