| dcterms.description | In March 1995 CAB International opened a Regional Office for Africa in Nairobi, complementing its existing offices in the Caribbean and Asia. The short term priorities for the Regional Office are to strengthen links with member countries and to explore ways of making CABI products and services more readily available. The Office seeks to develop projects which harness CABl's expertise in information training and systems development, and which utilize to the full the tropical pest management, ecological and taxonomic research and extension skills within its four International Institutes of Entomology, Mycology, Parasitology and Biological Control. CAB International already has a considerable portfolio of research and extension projects in Africa. Working closely with national programmes, it is involved with projects in 18 African countries in forestry and agroforestry pest management, agricultural and horticultural integrated pest and disease management, locust and grasshopper biological control and invasive weed control in natural habitats. Most of CABl's projects incorporate biological control as the core activity in integrated pest, disease and weed management, and many of these are coordinated from its International Institute of Biological Control Research Station, close to Nairobi. In the near future, the Regional Office will develop publishing and information projects in the region to make available books, journals and other information products and services on African agriculture. CABI is also developing a range of innovative electronic information and training products for personal computers. These include an electronic compendium, an electronic encyclopedia of agricultural research information, and distance learning products for veterinary training in Africa. These products are particularly relevant to information needs in Africa where the dissemination and use of computer disks can be an easier and more cost-effective way to provide information than printed materials. The Regional Office holds a full range of CABI's information products and has a well equipped seminar room. It has staff experienced in CABl's science and information products and services and can answer enquiries on all aspects of CABI's information, research and training activities. It will be the coordination centre for CABI's future project and training activities in the region.
