dcterms.descriptionIt was announced at CAB International's triennial Review Conference, held in London in July, that South Africa may shortly become a member of CABI. This is good news for southern Africa: Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe are already members and closer links with South Africa will bring benefits to the entire region. The Plant Protection Research Institute of South Africa's Agricultural Research Council houses the national collections of insects, arachnids, fungi and nematodes, the largest collection of these organisms in southern Africa. Many of the organisms have been collected throughout southern Africa. There are also many plant materials lodged in the institut which specializes in biological control of weeds, including water hyacinth and chromolaena. Taxonomic capacity within the region: should be further enhanced by the establishment of SAFRINET, pal of the Bio NET International initiative. This will establish link between taxonomists within the SADC region who are prepared to share their skills on a reciprocal basis.
