| dcterms.description | You ll probably know that there is something like a land-issue in Zimbabwe and South Africa. In most of the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, tenure private or communal ownership, access, laws and rights related to land are also much debated issues. Partly, this has historic reasons. Colonial rule also applying to land superposed local, often customary laws; in the post-independence era land was nationalised by various new governments to foster development, modernisation or re-distribution of resources. Since then, customary systems have been both denied as well as recognised and land has been both privatised as well as nationalised by post-independence governments. Evolving land rights, policy and tenure in Africa presents and discusses these issues and the ongoing land policy debates in various parts of the continent. It describes how different countries have approached this highly political and sensitive subject and explores possible future scenarios.
