Abstract/Description

This solution track addresses inadequate, costly and climate-vulnerable livestock feed systems in Ethiopia and Zambia by scaling locally adapted forage-based feed innovations and delivery models. In Ethiopia, the approach combines digitally enabled forage planning, feed-balance mapping, targeted utilisation strategies and market-led forage seed systems; in Zambia, it promotes home-mixed ruminant diets using mucuna, lablab, cereals and crop residues alongside forage seed production, feed enterprises, mechanisation and finance. Earlier pilots report doubled milk yields in Ethiopia, while Zambia trials recorded higher beef profits and dairy incomes. The track seeks to expand farmer adoption while strengthening forage and feed markets, rural enterprises, public extension, finance and institutional coordination for more productive and climate-resilient livestock systems.
