    Scaling Strategy for Smart Nkunganire System (SNS) in Rwanda: Increasing the Incomes of Smallholder Farmers between 2025 to 2028

    The Smart Nkunganire System (SNS), a digital platform developed through a public-private partnership, has revolutionised Rwanda's input supply chain since its launch in 2017. It has registered over 2.4 million farmers, facilitated the distribution of over 131,380 metric tons of agro-inputs, and managed transactions exceeding 85 billion RWF annually. This strategy outlines a plan to scale the SNS fertiliser recommendation module between 2025 and 2028, aiming to significantly improve the incomes of smallholder farmers while contributing to Rwanda's food security and economic growth.

    Smart Fertiliser Recommendations for Maize in Rwanda

Implemented under the RAB–CGIAR partnership (RwaSIS and Sustainable Farming Programme (SFP) initiatives), the trials aimed to determine whether data-driven, site-specific fertiliser management can enhance productivity and profitability compared to the traditional national blanket approach.

    El documento presenta la estrategia institucional del CIP para posicionar los resultados de biofortificación de papa en el Perú, desarrollada mediante fitomejoramiento convencional para aumentar el contenido de hierro y zinc en variedades locales y mejoradas. El propósito es reducir la anemia y la desnutrición crónica infantil, especialmente en zonas rurales altoandinas. La estrategia abarca cinco ejes: promoción del consumo, producción de semilla de calidad, fortalecimiento de cadenas de valor, alianzas público-privadas y organización interna del CIP. Incluye fases progresivas de visibilización (2025), consolidación (2026–2028) y difusión nacional (2028 en adelante). Se destaca su enfoque multisectorial, articulando agricultura, nutrición y políticas públicas bajo un marco de seguridad alimentaria y nutricional sostenible.

    The Inception Workshop: Co-designing the Project on Potato Production Through Zero Tillage Straw Mulching in Odisha, India

    This workshop report documents the inception meeting of the collaborative project Potato Production through Zero Tillage with Rice Straw Mulch (PZTM) held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on 14 October 2025. The event brought together 50 participants (25 women, 25 men) from the Government of Odisha, academia, farmer producer organizations (FPOs), women’s self-help groups (SHGs), and private sector partners. PZTM is a women-friendly, climate-smart, and resource-efficient practice that cultivates potatoes directly in rice straw mulch without prior tillage, enhancing soil health, conserving moisture, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The workshop focused on co-designing a participatory implementation plan that promotes gender equity and mechanized solutions for scaling. The report highlights discussions on four thematic areas: (1) Women-led scaling models, (2) Mechanized PZTM, (3) Integration with direct-seeded rice (DSR) systems, and (4) Gender-responsive digital advisory services. Field demonstrations and farmer field days are scheduled across Pipili, Nimapada, and Balipatana during the 2025–26 rabi season. The initiative supports CGIAR’s mission to strengthen climate-resilient, inclusive, and sustainable root crop production systems.

    Community Food Rescue and Food Banks in Peru: Local experiences to improve food nutrition in Lima peri-urban suburbs

Despite regulatory challenges, food rescue efforts demonstrate scalable solutions for addressing food insecurity and environmental sustainability. The report highlights the importance of institutional support, clear policy frameworks, and community autonomy in building resilient food systems.

    Roots, tubers, and bananas (RTBs) play an important role in food security and income generation in Uganda, Nigeria, and Côte d'Ivoire, serving as essential sources of food security, nutrition and wealth creation because of the numerous opportunities within the value chain. Despite their significance, demand for improved varieties of these crops is still very low, due to several barriers including, limited access to quality planting materials, low consumer awareness, among others. While these traditional barriers to improved variety adoption are binding, neglect of end-user preferences, especially for quality traits, in the variety development process is gaining tract as an important constraint to widespread adoption of new improved varieties. This has led to a shift in breeding programs towards demand-led breeding for enhanced acceptability of new varieties for higher adoption. These studies aim to understand the acceptability of advanced clones of RTB crops emanating from demand-led breeding lines, as an indication of their acceptability and potential adoption by end-users, and for feedback to the breeding programs on trait prioritization. The studies employ an experimental auction approach to elicit consumer demand for advanced breeding clones of sweetpotato, cassava and plantain across three countries (Uganda, Nigeria, and Cote D’Ivoire), based on various quality traits The study finds that consumer demand for improved sweetpotato clones in Uganda is significantly influenced by sensory attributes such as taste and appearance, and that urban consumers have higher WTP for clones that are nutritionally enhanced and have better taste, compared to their rural counterparts. Similar patterns are observed in Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire, where cassava products like gari and fufu, and plantain, respectively, are preferred based on traditional consumption traits. The studies highlight the importance of understanding end-user demand for RTBs products, based on intrinsic preferences, and the need for prioritizing quality traits such as taste, nutrition, and visual appearance, in the development of new improved RTB varieties, for enhanced acceptance, demand, and adoption. Similarly, on the demand side, the studies show that enhancing consumer awareness on hidden traits, such as nutritional benefits, are critical in improving demand for varieties with such traits.
