Abstract/Description

The development of Yemen’s National Food Security Strategy was motivated by the strong impacts of the recent food, fuel, and financial global crises on the country’s economy and its people. In addition, policymakers understand that improving food security will be key in achieving economic prosperity and national security. The National Food Security Strategy adopts the universally accepted definition of food security as occurring “when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.” This definition does not fit a significant portion of Yemen’s population—its food insecurity level is among the highest in the world.
